Spoil Your Skin Beautiful!

While I do a lot of makeup and hair that is really NOT natural I also am passionate about the health of skin and hair. So today I am going to go over the proper way to give your skin some love to keep it beautiful and health for a long time.

The Goddess of pure basic beauty routine ~

You do not have to spend a fortune to take good care of your skin at home. Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing and really costly skin care lines out there that ARE better than the rest. But today we are keeping it simple, so for the sake of low cost skin care (I will go into more costly methods another time) I am not going to name drop $50.00 facial cleansers. So if I had to pick I would say you need three  basic items to care for your skin, not including eye makeup remover that is a given. That isn't bad either because it truly is the first thing people see when they meet you.

Wash your face morning and night...ok mom geez~

Well there are different schools of thought on this issue. I personally wash morning and night, but I also use a very mild cleanser. If your cleanser is more harsh or medicated for certain skin issues you might want to invest in a more mild cleanser for the am wash routine. In the morning a fast pass will do and wash the sleep off your face to help you wake up. In the evening it is important that you do two passes over your face. Once to remove makeup and debris and one to truly cleanse the face.

Tone it down!~

Now some people really love a toner and some people not so much. I would never recommend a harsh toner and you know who you are * cough sea breeze cough*. Those can be filled with very drying agents, even if you have oily skin these can cause a problem because it dries out your skin so much that causes your body to produce more oil. For those of you with dry skin I don't think I need to explain to you why this can be a bad idea so I will let common sense take control here.

But you don't have to be tone deaf up in this hizzy there are a lot of really awesome gentle toners out there. Now I think my most favorite would be baking soda, it will neutralize the ph of your skin and keep it neutral for a good long time. That IS the point of a toner anyway, Simply mix a little with water and apply. Rinse it off and you are done! all for $.65.

Soft Spoken says a lot~

Soft skin is a sign of youthfulness so of course we all want soft smooth skin, moisturizing morning and night is recommended to maintain the health of your skin. I would defiantly say that if you are over say 25 you should use two different moisturizers, one at night and one for during the day. Why? because we want to give out face all the kisses of goodness it needs in the evening but also need to protect it during the day. There is no need to apply a moisturizer with sunscreen before you go to bed. My suggestion? Coconut oil or your favorite night cream. During the day something with an SPF is an absolutely must, if you are not doing that you might as well do nothing because your poor skin will look old long before it should if you are not protecting it from the sun.

Expose yourself~

Want a little extra lovin'? Well that never hurt anyone but take it easy. If you are ex-foliating more than two times a week you might be over doing it. Ex-foliating is the perfect way to keep your skin youthful and healthy by getting rid of all those dead skin cells to expose the beautiful healthy skin that is just below that mask of yuckiness. There are two different types of ex-foliation chemical (peels and enzymes) and manual (scrubs)  Stay clear of any ex-foliators that use pits of fruit or sand because these are to harsh for you skin and can cause scarring on the under layers of the dermis that you will not even see for 5-10 years. Stick to micro-beads, and sugar scrubs for the best results in the manual catagory. If you would like a chemical ex-foliant you can go to an  esthetician for a really good deep peel to remove several layers of acne scarring and sun damage OR you can get a simple enzyme peel for use at home that is much more gentle and can be used two times a week.  Follow the directions carefully to protect your delicate skin from harm and remember to be gentle while doing ex-foliation at home.

If you have any questions about skin care or the best choices for you, please feel free to comment below and I will answer your questions.

I'm a Nut for Coconut Oil!

I love coconut, from cake to cookies, ice cream and frozen concoctions I am always ready for a bit of coconut but what I didn't realize was how great coconut oil can be for us.

While gathering information for my last blog post I found out about the amazing healing properties that coconut oil possesses. I am just blown away at the number of things it can be used for. Treating illnesses, skin disorders, mouth wash, weight loss and numerous other things including beauty treatments. So I have decided to try a few things out and blog about the results of the use. So here is a list of the things I have tried Coconut Oil for and how I thought it worked. It should be noted here that if you have an allergy to tree nuts you will most likely NOT have a reaction to coconut oil. It has a very low incidence rate of allergic reaction so if that was a concern, be concerned no longer! There is also some contriversy over weather or not coconut oil is a good part of your diet, both sides seem very passionate and convincing! You will have to decide that one for yourself  BUT cosmetically speaking  it seems to be wonderful!

Coconut Oil as eye makeup remover ~

Let me tell you something I am nothing if not picky about eye makeup remover. I don't want to spend 30 minutes trying to get off that waterproof mascara! So when I read about using it as eye makeup remover I was skeptical at best. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it worked just as well as my M.A.C. eye makeup remover but without all the chemicals. At $13.00 for a pound it more than pays for its self in usefulness if you even only used at as eye makeup remover. So A + on this one!

Coconut Oil as Moisturizer ~

Whaaa? seriously oil on my face to moisturize? Give me a break, that sounds really gross. But again surprised that when applied lightly it works really nicely. I wouldn't put it on just before makeup but I would use it at night before bed for sure. The really great thing about this is that it has antibacterial properties so it can actually prevent you from getting pimples by killing bacteria on your skin.  A+ on this one too!

Lip conditioner ~

I already recommended it in my previous blog but I thought it was worth another mention. Mixed with brown sugar coconut oil does a nice job perfecting that pout and giving you soft kissable lips. so pucker up ladies and kiss a coconut, you will thank me later.

Mouthwash ~

I have to admit, it was at this point I wondered if I had started using brain bleach instead of coconut oil because honestly I can't imagine that I would ever be doing this. This technique is called "oil pulling" Basically the idea is that (and this has been tested and proven) if you swish the coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes YES 20 minutes it will remove toxins from your body. The article I found off google suggests 20-25 minutes and I wonder my Maven fans who in the world has 20 minutes every day that they don't need to speak? Well I found that 20 minutes and gave it a shot. I don't know if it does everything they claimed mostly because I am a Maven of Makeovers NOT science but it wasn't terrible it tasted good and the science is already behind it. Again with its antibacterial properties it doesn't seem far fetched that this would work. Apparently this works beautifully accompanied with a body cleans so if are jumping on that band wagon give the oil pulling a shot it couldn't hurt.

Coconut Oil for Cooking ~

Yes you will be happy to know that the Makeover Maven you know and love is a good cook! So when I heard how good the fats in this oil is for your body I swiftly replaced my cooking oils with coconut oil. You will be happy to know that we could not tell a difference in taste when using this oil instead of butter when cooking eggs, olive oil when cooking yellow rice or any other dish. I haven't used anything but coconut oil in a week. Coconut oil has so many health benefits when taken orally that I cannot list them all and will again send you to the link above.

In addition to the things above I spoke to a woman last Sunday who said she uses it for her baby daughters diaper rash and LOVES the result. Because of the anti fungal properties in coconut oil it can be used to treat yeast infections that are typically the cause of a diaper rash.

Hair Conditioner ~

It really is a nice hair moisturizer. Apply it wet or dry and you will have some shiny beautiful hair that smells a bit like coconut!  I should tell you that I have heard it works wonders for skin conditions like psoriasis from people who actually have the disorder. With so many different wonderful uses you should pick up and pound and try it out. Google coconut oil to find more information on the many amazing uses for coconut oil.

I am interested to hear from you! If you tried any of these ideas or anything others, how did it work?

Keeping your lashes and lips healthy!

Luscious Lashes and Lips!

In a day in age where beauty products seem to be endless, two things we focus on the most (besides our weight) are lashes and lips. The two L's in beauty that are not included in the spelling but are a giant part of what we consider desirable.
First lips, while women with thin lips are going to great lengths, even injecting of their own fat to get the full pout of Angelia Jolie there are more healthy ways for your lips to scream "look at me" without making a sound. So here are a few easy ways to have those beautiful lips, while still looking natural.

1. A moment on the Lips...
What's that saying? wait, this time putting that sugar on your lips is a good thing! A lot of us exfoliate our bodies but neglect our lips they need attention too! Here is an easy at home recipe for a lip exfoliant. You can most certainly go buy one if you would like the easiest route but when you make your own you are avoiding unnecessary chemicals. Jut mix some coconut oil and brown sugar together to make a paste. Then apply to your lips and GENTLY move your finger in a circluar motion for 30 seconds (more if needed). wash away(or lick YUM it taste great, and is totally editable) and apply a lip conditioner.

2.Conditioned to be that way
While a lot of you might like those chap sticks or lip glosses with menthol in them it should be noted that menthol is actually drying to your skin so it will defeat the purpose. While chap stick is great while you are out in the elements because it has great sunscreens, just before going to bed or after exfoliating use a lip conditioner instead of a chaptick. The lip conditioners have antioxidants, and vitamins that are great for your lips. I use Lip conditioner when working on production sets and after one application the actors are seeking me out looking for more. They love it and I am NOT talking about women I am talking about men. There is no color or girly smell it simply gives the lip a healthy moisturized look without looking too shiny.

Lip Conditioners I recommend:

• Use that same coconut oil you used to make the scrub as a lip conditioner. You would be surprised to know how totally amazing coconut oil is for you. It has many uses ... but that is another (and coming soon) blog post. You could keep some in a small jar next to your night stand.
Argan Oils Orgnanic Lip Conditioner- Balm

• I keep Nutragena Lip Nutrition in my kit and everyone loves it!

Puff up!
Well we all know there are a million lip plumpers out there on the market. If you are unaware this is how most of them work. They use an irritant to cause your lip to have a reaction, hence why your lips "plump". It is more of a skin reaction to chemicals that are burning it but hey they will go numb in a few minutes so call it whatever you want with your sexy fuller lips. Just make sure you condition them later so they look full and soft like a cloud instead of full and flaky like a croissant. You can go a little fancier and a bit more costly and get one that contains palmitoyl oligopeptides as a way to trigger collagen and elastin fiber production in lips to make them plumper, but those are to achieve "long term results" so it will not be immediate.
The Perfect Fringe
There has been a lot of advancements in lashes. Most women and men for that matter directly associate lash legnth, fullness and darkness with youthfulness and beauty. So of coarse we all want long, black and thick lashes. Instead of going over extensions and those types of things today we are going to focus on our own lashes. So here is a little advice on the care and keeping of your lashes.

Leftovers
Leftovers might be good the next day from dinner but left overs from mascara...Gross! If you want to use an actual eye makeup remove I prefer M.A.C.'s eye makeup remover. They have a few different products depending on personal preference but whoever is behind that M.A.C. counter can help you choose the right one. If you want a cheaper more natural route feel free to use that coconut oil from the recipe above or even olive oil.

Lash Tinting
This might not be the most natural solution out there, but having your lashes tinted can be a great way to look great even at the beach or just out of the shower. It is fairly inexpensive and doesn't require daily attention. If you already have full long lashes but are lacking the black that makes them va va voom this will be a quick easy fix.

Don't you love me?
Lashes need to be conditioned too after all you are putting mascara on them every, ok well almost everyday. There are some really great all natural lash conditioners out there but I don't think you need to spend a fortune on this one. Just get one that isn't applied just before your mascara the point of this is to put it on at night time while you are giving your lashes a break. You could defiantly go back to your trusty coconut oil to make that 13.00 you spent on it worth every penny.

Wiggling is fun!
So do it every time you apply your mascara. Start at the base of the lashes and wiggle wiggle wiggle that wand. There is no need to invest in a vibrating wand for gosh sakes just give yourself some wiggle room and save the $20.00 bucks you would have spent.
